Dragon Quest Monsters 2

After the resounding success of Dragon Quest Monsters in Japan, it was only a matter of time before a sequel would come along. Bringing with it a new cast of heroes, new monsters to catch, and slowly exploring the world by gaining new keys, there was just enough added to it to get people coming back for more. Moreover, it was released twice as two almost, but not quite identical games: Cobi's Journey, and Tara's Adventure. The story and quests are the same, but each has slightly different monsters to collect, and different keys for accessing certain areas. In order to collect all of the monsters players had to connect their GBA to someone who had the other version of the game, whereby they could trade monsters.

The game follows one of two siblings, Cobi and Tara, who have recently moved to island kingdom of Greatlog with their family to start up monster breeding. One day the kingdom's troublemaking prince, along with one of his monster buddies, manages to remove a plug from a cave. This causes the island to start sinking. To temporarily prevent this, the monster uses himself to plug the hole. He can't stay there forever, though, so it is up to Codi and Tara to explore the land in search of a permanent plug. They do this by acquiring keys that grand them access to new areas as they continue their search.

Above: Dragon Quest Monsters 2 was split into two games, one starring Cobi, the other his sister Tara.  The games were essentially the same, but they had slightly different rosters of monsters to collect.  Gamers had to connect their GBCs together, each running a different version of the game, to collect and trade all of the monsters.

During the first half of the game players go on their adventure to save the kingdom, but once this is done they can continue playing so to find all of the various monsters that are available. This could take quite some time too considering that there were over 300 of them in the game.

Monsters 2 did quite well for itself in Japan, selling about 1.5 million copies, though there isn't any data available for how it did in the West (it's surprising the game even came out in that region given how poorly the first Monsters game did there).
