Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart

After a couple of successful romps on the GBC, Dragon Quest Monsters made its way to the Gameboy Advance. Starring a ten year old Prince Keifer from Dragon Quest VII, the game makes some pretty massive changes from previous instalments in the series. However, unlike the last two games, Caravan Heart never got released outside of Japan. One fun fact about the game is that it is the last to be released by Enix prior to the company merging with Squaresoft in 2003.

Right from the get go, players could see the major changes made in this game, the largest being that monster breeding had been eliminated. Monsters evolved in this game by collecting monster hearts that could be absorbed into the creatures to make them more powerful. Also, humans would come along on adventures from time to time. As the title of the game suggests, players also travelled around in a caravan as they visited new places, and gained new monsters and humans to join the team along the way.

Caravan Heart’s story takes place on Keifer’s tenth birthday, with him causing mischief. When his father finds out, he’s quite angry, causing Keifer to run and hide in his room. While there he is visited a mysterious man named Magarugi who tells the young prince that if he collects the Orbs of Loto he’ll be granted one wish. Keifer accepts the offer and is transported to the world of Torland, where Dragon Quest II took place. Upon his arrival the prince encounters a small caravan whose leader, Luin, is also looking for the orbs in hopes that they will be able to cure his sick parents. However, the caravan quickly sees that Keifer is much stronger than Luin and asks him to be their leader instead. With that the search begins for the orbs to that Keifer can go home, and Luin can save his parents.

While the first two Monsters games sold in the millions, Caravan Hearts didn’t fair so well, only selling a little under 600,000 units.
