Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon

With the Dragon Quest series doing well in Japan, Enix and Chunsoft decided to branch into various side projects with the series. One such new series to emerge from this was Mystery Dungeon, which, until recently, has always starred to popular merchant from Dragon Quest IV, Torneko. In the first game, Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon, players help the ambitious salesman explore various dungeons in search of loot that he can sell for a tidy profit.

The game is a rougelike with randomly generated dungeons, so there was plenty of replay value to be had in it. Along the way, Torneko would encounter all of the usually different types of monsters that one might expect to come across in the Dragon Quest universe (slimes, ghosts, mushroom people, etc.). If he gets defeated, Torneko doesn't die, but he does get booted out of the dungeon he was exploring by the monster denizens living there.

At the end of the day, though, Torneko is out to find as much treasure as he can, so he can be a ridiculously wealthy man. This will result in many trips into the dungeons in search of fancy items that he can carry back to town and sell.

While the game was a side project being handled by Chunsoft, they were still able to bring in Koichi Sugiyama to write music for the game. The game was fairly popular in Japan, but never saw a release in the West.
